Welcome to the setup instructions of the Discography section of WHERE OR WHEN.

Please read this page completely before starting the interactive database.

You must have:

• the 'Java' function of your browser enabled. (see 'Activate Javascript in your browser')
• Savant active (running) (see 'Savant web server')

Savant web server

As you will have noticed when your computer was rebooted, the Savant program window shows on your screen.

(The Savant web server aplication makes it posible to use this interactive database, which is written in the PERL language)

You need this Savant program to be able to use the interactive database so do not close it if you want to use the interactive database !

You can can customize the appearance of Savant in the following way for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT.

• Click with the right mouse button on the Start button at the left hand bottom side of your screen.
• Click with the left mouse button on 'Open'.
• Double click with the left mouse button on 'Programs'.
• Double click with the left mouse button on 'Startup'.
• Click with the right mouse button on 'Savant Web Server'.
• Click with the left mouse button on 'Properties'.
• Change the Startup mode (Normal) in Minimized.
• Click with the left mouse button on 'Ok'.
• Close the 'Startup' window by Clicking on the 'X'.
• Close the 'Programs' window by Clicking on the 'X'.
• Close the 'Start menu' window by Clicking on the 'X'.

You can can customize the appearance of Savant in the following way for Windows XP/ME.

• Start your Windows explorer
• Search your C disc for ' Savant*.lnk '

You will find one or several files named 'Savant Web Server.lnk' or ' Savant Web Server '

Perform the following steps to EACH of them:

• Use your right mouse button and click on it.
• A pop-up window appears.
• Use your left mouse button and click on 'propperties'.
• Change the option for running this shortcut in "minimized".
• Use your left mouse button and click on "OK".
• Close your Windows explorer
  

The next time your computer starts up the Savant program will be minimized, but always active.

OR

If you do not want that the Savant program is active while you are NOT using the WHERE OR WHEN discography you need to take the following steps.

First find out where Savant has placed its information which your operating system reads to start the program after starting your computer.

• Open your ' windows explorer '
• Go with your mouse cursor to the left part of your screen and click with the left mouse button on ' C '
• Scroll the left section of the screen down and click with the left mouse button on the ' windows ' directory
• Scroll the right section of the screen down and double click with the left mouse button on the ' start menu ' directory
• Scroll the right section of the screen down and double click with the left mouse button on the " program " directory
• Scroll the right section of the screen down and double click with the left mouse button on the " startup " directory
• You will now see the Savant Icon; click once with the left mouse button on this icon (it is now selected)
• Press the ' delete ' key on your keyboard and click on ' Yes '

The next time you start your computer, Savant will not be started !

Since we need Savant to be able to use the discography we need to make a shortcut on the desktop of your computer so we can start Savant manually when we need it.

• Put your mouse cursor on the Desktop screen
• Press the right mouse button
• Move the mouse cursor to ' New ' and click on it with the left mouse button
• Move the mouse cursor to ' Shortcut ' and click on it with the left mouse button
• Move the mouse cursor to the ' Browse ' button and click on it with the left mouse button
• Go to the ' C:\Savant ' directory and double click on it with the left mouse button
• Double click with the left mouse button on the ' Savant.exe ' file
• Click on ' Next ' with the left mouse button
• Click on ' Finish ' with the left mouse button

We now have created a shortcut on the desktop for the Savant web server.

Don't forget to start the Savant Web server before starting the WHERE OR WHEN discography.

Activate Javascript in your browser

To be able to use this interactive database you need to enable the Javascript function of your browser !

First check if the Javascript function is already enabled by moving your mouse pointer on the 'Javascript Test' text.

JavaScript Test

If you see a pop-up window when you move the mouse pointer over the 'Javascript Test' text then Javascript is enabled, if you don't see this pop-up window the Javascript function is disabled and you need to enable it.

Since every browser has a different way of enabling Javascript we recommend that you look this up in the help function of your browser by searching on 'Java'.

Headers and Footers

Since you are using a browser to access this interactive database you need to modify some settings of this browser to be able to have a clean print output.

Your browser will print the address of the printed page (http://127.0.0.1/.....).

This can be surpressed by:

Microsoft Internet Explorer

• Move your mouse pointer to 'File' and click on it.
• Click on 'Page setup'.
• Remove the ' &u ' (Page address (URL) at the Header section.

Netscape Navigator

• Move your mouse pointer to 'File' and click on it.
• Click on 'Page setup'.
• Uncheck the 'Document Location (URL)' checkmark at the Header section.

Customizing the Search output settings

Since not all computers are the same, the performance of the discography software will vary depending on the CPU speed and Memory of your computer.

Depending on your browser the result of a search may cause overload of your browser memory.

For that reason we have limited the output to certain maximums.

You can change these settings by clicking on "SETTINGS" at the top of the Discography main screen.

FINAL PROCEDURE

You have now completed all necessary setup procedures.

Is your Javascript enabled ?

Is your Savant program active ?

Then close this window by clicking on the "X".

The Where or When startup screen will appear.

You may now select the Chronology or the Discography section .
If you select the Discography, a window will appear with "HELP" and "CONTINUE".
First click on "HELP" to read the operating instructions ("HOW TO USE THE WHERE OR WHEN DISCOGRAPHY").
After reading and printing these instructions, click on the "X" to close the "HELP" section.
On the new window click on "CONTINUE" and you will be in the main Discography screen.
